In this guide, we explain each major coating type available on prepainted steel and aluminium coils, how each one responds to the UAE's specific climate conditions, and which system is right for your application.
Why the UAE Climate Demands Careful Coating Selection
The UAE presents a combination of environmental stressors that few other regions match simultaneously. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 48°C, UV radiation intensity is among the highest in the world, coastal cities such as Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, and Ras Al Khaimah expose structures to salt-laden marine air, and seasonal humidity — particularly in the period between June and September — creates conditions that accelerate paint breakdown and substrate corrosion.
Inland areas face their own challenges: extreme thermal cycling between day and night causes repeated expansion and contraction of metal panels, stressing the adhesion between paint film and substrate. Industrial zones around Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah, and Sharjah add airborne chemical pollutants into the equation. A coating system that performs adequately in a temperate European climate will often underperform significantly in these conditions — which is why paint specification must be matched to the actual environment, not just the project budget.
The Four Main Coating Systems for Prepainted Steel and Aluminium
Regular Modified Polyester (RMP)
Regular Modified Polyester — commonly referred to as RMP or standard polyester — is the most widely used coating system globally and remains the most affordable option. It is formed from a polyester resin cross-linked with melamine at a peak metal temperature of approximately 224–235°C during the coil coating process.
RMP delivers good workability, a wide range of gloss levels from matt to high gloss, and strong adhesion to both steel and aluminium substrates. In the UAE context, it is well-suited to interior applications — false ceilings, internal partition panels, furniture components, and indoor appliance bodies — where direct UV exposure is limited. For exterior roofing and cladding in UAE conditions, RMP typically offers a serviceable life of 10 to 15 years before noticeable gloss loss and chalking begin. It passes 1,000 hours of UV resistance testing (ASTM G154) with a colour change of less than 5 NBS units, and withstands 750 hours of neutral salt spray without blistering (ASTM B117).
RMP is the standard specification for PPGI coils used in general construction, rolling shutters, sandwich panels, and domestic roofing — applications where the cost efficiency outweighs the need for premium longevity.
Silicon Modified Polyester (SMP)
Silicon Modified Polyester — SMP — improves on standard polyester by incorporating silicon resin into the paint formulation. The silicon component significantly increases the coating's resistance to UV degradation and thermal stress, extending exterior service life to approximately 15 to 20 years in UAE conditions.
SMP retains the excellent formability of polyester-based coatings, making it easy to process into corrugated profiles, standing seam roofing, and curved cladding panels without cracking or delamination. It is widely specified for public and commercial construction — airport buildings, industrial roofing, school and hospital complexes, and warehouse facilities — where a mid-range budget demands performance above standard polyester but does not warrant the premium of a full fluoropolymer system.
In coastal GCC environments such as Muscat, Jeddah, and the northern Emirates coastline, SMP on an Aluzinc or PPAZ base combines corrosion-resistant substrate with improved UV stability to deliver a well-rounded specification at a competitive price point.
PVDF — Polyvinylidene Fluoride (Kynar 500®)
PVDF — Polyvinylidene Fluoride, manufactured under the internationally recognised Kynar 500® formulation — represents the premium tier of coil coating systems and is the correct choice wherever maximum long-term performance is required. The fluorocarbon resin is cured at a peak metal temperature of 249–254°C, producing a densely cross-linked film with exceptional molecular stability against UV radiation, heat, and chemical attack.
In UAE conditions, PVDF coatings retain more than 90% of their original gloss after 2,000 hours of accelerated UV testing — compared to 25% retention for standard polyester at half that exposure. Salt spray resistance reaches 2,000 hours without blistering, double the performance of RMP. Chalk resistance is rated above 4 on the AS1580 scale after 20 years of limited warranty under PVDF, against 10 years for standard polyester. The coating's hydrophilic surface characteristic resists dust adhesion, which is a practical advantage in the sand-prone environment of the Arabian Peninsula.
PVDF is the specified standard for landmark façades, high-rise cladding, premium roofing on commercial and government buildings, and any project in Oman, Saudi Arabia, or the UAE where a 25-year maintenance-free performance target is written into the project specification. It is also the coating of choice for defence, medical, and semiconductor industry applications where chemical resistance is mandatory. AISL manufactures PVDF-coated PPGI, PPAZ, and PPAL coils across a full RAL colour palette.
Plastisol — For the Most Demanding Industrial Environments
Plastisol is a PVC-based coating system in a category of its own — applied at thicknesses of up to 200 microns, compared to the 20–25 microns typical of PVDF or polyester systems. At room temperature it remains liquid, fusing into a tough, homogeneous film during oven curing. The result is a coating with outstanding impact resistance, abrasion resistance, and electrical insulation properties that no thin-film system can match.
In the UAE and GCC market, Plastisol is the standard specification for cold storage panels and food processing facilities — where the coating must withstand repeated mechanical impact, moisture condensation, and frequent cleaning with aggressive chemicals. It is also used in automotive and military applications, and wherever non-slip or cushioning surface properties are required. Available in smooth or leather-grain textures on both galvanized steel and aluminium substrates, it offers a genuinely industrial-grade surface finish.
