What Are Prepainted Coils — and Why Does the Base Material Matter?
All three products — PPGI, PPAZ, and PPAL — belong to the same family of prepainted (or colour-coated) metal coils. The term "prepainted" means the metal has been coated with primer and topcoat paint before fabrication, rather than after. This continuous coil-coating process produces a consistent, factory-controlled finish that is more durable and uniform than post-fabrication painting.
The critical difference between the three lies in the base material — the metal substrate beneath the paint. The base material determines corrosion resistance, weight, strength, formability, and ultimately, cost. Getting this right at the specification stage saves significant expense over the life of a project.
PPGI — Prepainted Galvanized Steel Coils
PPGI stands for Pre-Painted Galvanized Iron, though the correct modern term is Pre-Painted Galvanized Steel. The base material is hot-dip galvanized steel — cold-rolled steel coated with a layer of zinc (typically 120 to 275 GSM) to protect against corrosion, and then painted with a colour coat on top.
PPGI is the most widely used of the three. It offers a strong balance of durability, formability, and cost-effectiveness, making it the default choice for the majority of construction and industrial applications across Dubai, Sharjah, and across the GCC.
Key Properties of PPGI
- Base metal: galvanized steel (zinc coating 120–275 GSM)
- Thickness range: 0.20 mm to 1.50 mm
- Weight: heavier than aluminium-based products
- Corrosion resistance: good — the zinc layer provides both barrier and cathodic protection
- Formability: excellent — easy to roll, cut, and shape on site
- Typical paint systems: RMP, SMP, HDPE, PVDF, Plastisol
Best Applications for PPGI
PPGI is the right choice for roofing and wall cladding panels, sandwich panels, rolling shutters, garage doors, steel furniture, interior partitions, and general construction fabrication. It performs well in most UAE environments, though in highly aggressive coastal or industrial zones, PPAZ offers a step up in longevity.

PPAZ — Prepainted Aluzinc Coils
PPAZ stands for Pre-Painted Aluzinc (also written PPGL — Pre-Painted Galvalume). The base material here is Aluzinc — a steel sheet coated not with pure zinc, but with an alloy of 55% aluminium, 43.4% zinc, and 1.6% silicon. This alloy coating gives PPAZ a notably different performance profile compared to PPGI.
The aluminium content in the coating provides a strong barrier effect against oxidation, while the zinc content ensures sacrificial cathodic protection at cut edges and scratches. The result is a product that outlasts standard galvanized steel in corrosive environments by a considerable margin — typically two to four times longer in equivalent conditions.
Key Properties of PPAZ
- Base metal: Aluzinc steel (AZ30 to AZ150 coating weight)
- Thickness range: 0.20 mm to 1.50 mm
- Corrosion resistance: superior — particularly in coastal, high-humidity, and industrial environments
- Heat resistance: better than PPGI due to aluminium content
- Surface appearance: characteristic spangled or zero-spangle metallic finish under the paint
- Typical paint systems: RMP, SMP, PVDF
Best Applications for PPAZ
PPAZ is the preferred choice for projects in coastal cities — Abu Dhabi, Ras Al Khaimah, Muscat, and similar environments — where salt-laden air accelerates corrosion. It is widely used in industrial roofing, airport structures, PEB (Pre-Engineered Buildings), corrugated roofing in industrial complexes, and any application requiring a longer maintenance-free service life.

PPAL — Prepainted Aluminium Coils
PPAL stands for Pre-Painted Aluminium. Unlike PPGI and PPAZ, which use steel as the base metal, PPAL uses a pure aluminium alloy substrate — typically alloys such as 1100, 3003, 3105, 5052, or 5005. This makes PPAL a fundamentally different product category, offering properties that steel-based coils simply cannot match.
Aluminium is approximately one-third the weight of steel, naturally corrosion-resistant (it forms its own protective oxide layer), and highly formable. When prepainted, it delivers a lightweight, attractive, and durable panel material suited to precision applications.
Key Properties of PPAL
- Base metal: aluminium alloy (1100, 3003, 3105, 5052, and others)
- Thickness range: 0.20 mm to 2.00 mm
- Weight: significantly lighter than both PPGI and PPAZ
- Corrosion resistance: excellent — aluminium does not rust
- Formability: excellent for deep drawing and complex profiles
- Typical paint systems: PVDF, polyester, HDPE, anti-bacterial coatings
Best Applications for PPAL
PPAL is the standard choice for HVAC ducting and appliance bodies, false ceilings and interior ceiling systems, façade cladding on premium buildings, cold storage panels, signage and decorative panels, and automotive components. Its lightweight nature reduces structural load and simplifies installation — a significant advantage on large-scale ceiling or façade projects.

How to Choose Between the Three
The right product depends on three factors: environment, application, and project lifespan target.
If the project is in a standard inland environment and budget efficiency is a priority — roofing, cladding, shutters, or general structural panels — PPGI is the proven, cost-effective answer. It performs reliably under normal UAE conditions and is available in the widest range of RAL colours and coating options.
If the project is in a coastal location, near an industrial zone, or requires a low-maintenance service life of 20 years or more, PPAZ justifies the modest premium. The additional corrosion resistance pays back in reduced maintenance and replacement cost over time.
If the project involves internal systems — ceilings, HVAC, cold storage, or lightweight architectural cladding — where weight saving and rust immunity are priorities, PPAL is the correct specification. It is not a substitute for PPGI in structural roofing, but in its target applications it has no equal among the three.
