What Is PPGI? A Complete Guide for UAE Buyers
Walk past any warehouse in Dubai's industrial zones, look at the roofing of a factory in Sharjah, or open a household appliance almost anywhere in the world — and you are looking at PPGI. It is one of the most widely used steel products on the planet, and it is a foundational material for the UAE's construction, manufacturing, and appliance sectors. Yet many buyers source it without fully understanding what they are buying or how to evaluate quality.
This guide covers everything a UAE buyer needs to know about PPGI: what it is, how it is made, what specifications matter, where it is used, and how to choose the right supplier.
What Is PPGI?
PPGI stands for Prepainted Galvanized Iron — also commonly written as Pre-Painted Galvanized Steel Coil. It is a steel coil that has been galvanized (zinc-coated for corrosion protection) and then passed through a continuous colour-coating line where layers of paint or coating are applied and oven-cured to the surface.
The result is a finished, ready-to-use steel product that combines the structural strength of steel, the corrosion resistance of zinc, and the aesthetic and protective properties of a factory-applied paint coating — all in a single material that can be cut, formed, and fabricated on site without any additional finishing.
How Is PPGI Made?
The manufacturing process follows several precise stages:
Step 1 — Galvanizing the Base Steel
A base steel coil is passed through a bath of molten zinc at purity greater than 99%. This hot-dip process bonds a zinc layer to both surfaces of the steel, creating the galvanized base known as mill-finish galvanized coil (GI coil). At AISL, zero-spangle or skin-passed coils are processed to ensure a smooth, consistent surface ideal for colour coating.
Step 2 — Cleaning and Pre-Treatment
The galvanized coil is cleaned, degreased, and chemically pre-treated. This stage is critical — it ensures the paint coating bonds tightly to the zinc surface and does not peel, blister, or delaminate in service.
Step 3 — Primer Application
A primer coat is applied to both the top and bottom surfaces and oven-cured. AISL's standard primer is 5 microns on both faces.
Step 4 — Finish Coat Application
The decorative and protective finish coat is applied over the primer and cured at high temperature. AISL's standard top coat is 20 microns (over a 5-micron primer), and the standard bottom coat is 7 microns (over 5-micron primer). Both can be customised based on project requirements.
PPGI Specifications — What to Check When Buying
When sourcing PPGI in the UAE, these are the key specification parameters to confirm with your supplier:
All specifications at AISL can be customised to match project or customer requirements.
PPGI Coating Types — Which One Do You Need?
Not all PPGI coatings are equal. The coating type determines how the finished product performs in terms of durability, UV resistance, flexibility, and surface finish. AISL offers the following coating options:
Standard Polyester (RMP / Regular Modified Polyester)
The most widely used coating for general construction and roofing applications. Cost-effective, with good colour retention and formability.
SMP — Silicone Modified Polyester
Higher UV and heat resistance than standard polyester. Suitable for roofing and cladding in harsh outdoor environments like the UAE's desert climate.
PVDF / Kynar 500 (Ultra Coating)
The premium option — up to 4-layer coating systems reaching 120 microns. Outstanding colour fastness, UV resistance, and durability. Specified on architectural and landmark projects.
Plastisol (Plasto and Plasto Leather)
Thick, flexible coatings up to 220 microns. Excellent formability and impact resistance. Used where deep profiling or a textured leather-finish appearance is required.
Hygiene (Anti-Bacterial Coating)
Developed for food processing facilities, hospitals, and pharmaceutical environments where surface hygiene is a critical specification.
Other Options
AISL also supplies HDPE, Acrylic (Acry), PMMA, ARS abrasion-resistant, Eco Fresh self-cleaning, Wrinkle anti-dust, TOC (thin organic coating), Endura anti-corrosive, and Terracotta texture-finish coatings.
Where Is PPGI Used in the UAE?
PPGI's combination of strength, corrosion resistance, formability, and colour range makes it one of the most versatile materials in the region:
Construction and Roofing
Hot-dip PPGI is the material of choice for roofing sheets, wall panels, and cladding on industrial buildings, warehouses, and commercial structures across the UAE. Its ability to be roll-formed into profiled sheets on-site makes it fast and cost-effective to install.
Home Appliances
Electro-galvanized PPGI — with its smooth, clean surface finish — is widely used in the outer panels of washing machines, refrigerators, air conditioners, and other household appliances where interior decoration and surface quality are priorities.
Furniture and Interior Fit-Out
PPGI's formability and wide colour range make it a popular choice for steel furniture, office partitioning, door skins, and decorative interior panels.
Automotive and Transport
Lightweight PPGI panels are used in vehicle body components and transport equipment where corrosion resistance and paintability are required without the weight penalty of thicker steel.
Advertising and Signage
The flat, colour-consistent surface of PPGI makes it ideal for outdoor signage, hoardings, and advertising structures — a significant market in the UAE's active outdoor advertising sector.
How to Choose the Right PPGI Supplier in the UAE
When evaluating suppliers, look for these five factors:
Certifications — ISO 9001 (quality), ISO 14001 (environment), and ISO 45001 (safety) certification confirm a quality management system is in place. SASO certification is essential if you are exporting to Saudi Arabia.
In-house colour coating — Suppliers who colour-coat in their own facility (rather than trading third-party material) offer better quality control, customisation, and lead times.
Full specification range — Confirm the supplier can match your required thickness, width, zinc coating weight, and paint system — not just the most common sizes.
Custom colour capability — A supplier offering the full RAL range and custom colour matching gives you far more design flexibility. View AISL's full colour palette.
Delivery network — For GCC-wide projects, confirm the supplier can deliver to your project location, not just across the UAE.
